Bryan loves Aleshia!

A long time ago, when I was first starting out as a wedding photographer, I shot a lot of elopements. Colorado’s such a beautiful place; it seems like a magnet for those who want to run away and get married in a gorgeous setting. I can’t tell you how many weddings I shot where I was the photographer and the witness! But that was then and this is now. I rarely get the privilege of being the sole witness to a wedding any more, so when the odd elopement comes my way I am always tickled pink. Such was the case with Bryan and Aleshia, who live in Arkansas and have been together for eight years. They found me via Reverend Kirk Fowler, who’s a great guy — I love working with him. The only other person present at the ceremony was Reverend Fowler’s wife. In cases like this I think the photographs are especially important, since no one in their families was there in person. The photos really have to tell the story.

I had such a nice time with Aleshia and Bryan. It was a privilege being part of their big day, and thanks guys for choosing me to record it!

What a beautiful spot to get married!

The kiss!

The hug!

Gotta love a barefoot bride! And she bought her dress at TJ Maxx for $25 the day before the wedding!

I surprised the newlyweds with a little cake that I bought at the grocery store and had inscribed with their names and the date.

My other passion

You know I love my job. I take such great joy in documenting happy events and capturing singular moments in my clients’ lives, and I’m lucky to be paid for that. But I don’t just photograph brides, bellies and babies. I found this quote today by the late Bill Brandt: “It is part of the photographer’s job to see more intensely than most people do. He must have and keep in him something of the receptiveness of the child who looks at the world for the first time or the traveler who enters a strange country.” How very true! I too suffer from the curse of the photographer — everywhere around me I see great photographs waiting to be captured. So occasionally I actually take pictures of just… stuff. Not brides, not high school seniors, not cute babies, but the world around me. I do actually have an art degree believe it or not, and every now and then I have to prove to my mother that my college education wasn’t totally in vain!

If you happen to be on the north end of Colorado Springs, drop into the Barnes & Noble/Starbucks on Briargate and Academy. I’ve got nine prints on display there through July 31st. I’ll post them here, but honestly they’re much better looking in person. So go and check them out! And FYI, archivally printed, matted and signed versions of these (and other) images are available for purchase in two sizes. Contact me for more info on that.

Thanks for looking — enjoy! Tamera
